In “American Government and Politics Today” by Barbara Bardes, Mack C. Shelley II, and Steffen W. Schmidt the authors provided the readers or students with a relevant, interactive text that attempts to take them outside of the classroom environment and into their everyday lives. Having the ability to link the past to the present, while also thinking ahead to the future, is a difficult task for authors in a subject seemingly overloaded with textbook options. They authors Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt, however, have adopted a rational approach and create a learning environment within the textbook itself to keep with the theme of having students as active, informed citizens. The government provides order. The Founders assumed that people are self-interested and that in order to satisfy their interests, people tend to form factions. Chapter 2: The Constitutions its states that the “The U.S. Constitution structures nearly every facet of American life, from deciding who wins an election to stating whether a police officer can legally search your car on a routine traffic stop.” The first attempt at an American government was developed during the Revolutionary War and was known as the Articles of Confederation. Schmidt all individually aside from their work on “American Government and Politics Today” each have other qualifications on American politics and government based on their biography and other projects. Babara Bardes specializes in American government, politics, and public policy analysis receiving her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Cincinnati in 1975. Bardes was a founding member of a committee responsible for creating an academic program for women’s studies. Bardes continues to engage in research and publication in political science. Bardes has written articles on public opinion and foreign policy and on women and politics. Such as, “Thinking about Public Policy; Declaration of Independence: Women and Political Power in Nineteenth-Century American Fiction.
