915 Words4 Pages

In the music video “Drive By” by the band Train uploaded on Youtube.com, the singer is confessing his feelings to his romantic interest. Train uses rhetoric strategies to show the feelings of the singer, to the woman in the video. The main rhetoric strategy we will be looking at is pathos, we will cover some ethos, but not logos, as it driven mostly by emotions being a “love song”. The video start off with the singer on the phone with the woman, trying to tell her that he is sorry. He then goes and gets into his sports car and starts driving, It is not clear where he is going to yet, but it will be very important towards the end. You’re the one who left.” She then tells the singer she has to go. The first verse he starts out by saying “On the other side of the street I knew/stood a girl that looked like you/I thought this can’t be true/because you moved to west LA/ or New York/or Santa Fe/or wherever to get away from me”. This verse plus the phone call at the beginning implies that he has something to hurt this woman. The first chorus shows how they first meet, it looks as if she works for a vineyard as a host. The lyrics in the chorus start by saying “Oh, but that one night/was more then just right” then goes on to say “Oh I swear to you/I’ll be there for you/this is not a drive by.” This, plus the parts of the chorus that makes the woman believe him, helps his case of trying to prove his love to her as well. In the second verse the singer states “My love for you went viral/now here you are again/let’s skip the how’ve you been/and get down to the more than friends at last.” This tells her that their relationship has been building slowly but he is ready to commit to her. Then the second chorus starts and shows what the big mistake he made was, the singer says “Oh, but that one night/was still the highlight/I didn’t need you until I came to.” They had gotten intimate and he left the morning after, before she woke up. Which also make her doubt his love for a second, but not enough to really make her
