Growing up with a pescetarian mother (eating no meat other than fish) and omnivore father has not been the easiest of tasks. My mother likes to think she is holier-than-thou because of her diet, while my father just sits and laughs in the corner while eating a stack of ribs. When I read Alan Richmands excerpt “Fork It Over: My Beef with Vegans” I identified with his experiences with vegans because they were what I had experienced with my pescetarian mother over the years. Despite non meat eaters trying to convert meat eaters through persistent ranting, describing in great detail how the animals are raised and slaughtered (guilt tripping), and by trying to demonstrate that food made without animal products can taste just as good as those made with animal products a person can still make the decision to eat meat and enjoy it.
Discussing Race In Jay Smooth’s TEDx talk he talks about how to make race an easier topic to discuss. If we can take the mindset that we are either racist or not racist and begin to realize that non-racist people can think and say racist things, race might be able to become a less touchy subject to discuss. Growing up as a full white male, I haven’t faced much discrimination.
Relationships between police officers and the general public have been a roller coaster ride over the past 30 years, when it comes to the way some officers act when put in bad situations, or even if they are just acting out of anger. Melvin Russell explains in his speech that police officers need to do a better job of working with the public and treating them as if they are a customer. Russell has been a police officer himself for nearly 40 years, and is the Chief of the Community Partnership Division of the Baltimore Police Department. The TedTalk, “I Love Being a Police Officer, but We Need Reform,” by Melvin Russell was very persuasive and proposed a strong argument by using pathos and having an engaging voice, being credible in his words,
A speech is defined as a formal address or discourse delivered to an audience. A significant person of the community usually gives commencement speeches so the students can leave motivated and ready for the so-called “real world.” “Through different uses of the rhetorical strategies, pathos, ethos, and logos, the speakers are able to connect and relate to the audience members. At the college of William and Mary, Mike Tomlin, a football coach delivers a speech that effectively uses two of the three strategies to acknowledge the graduating class. Starting off, Tomlin explains why he is proud to be there and what exactly the place means to him.
In senator Rand Presidential speech, his main idea is his vision for America. In his presidential speech he use the three rhetorical appeals logos, pathos, and ethos. “ I have a vision for America, I want to be the return of prosperity, a government restrained by the constitution.” Senator Rand tells what wants to do for America. When crafting an argument an author must find a way to appeal to their audience. The three different types of rhetorical appeals are ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is the appeal to ethics, pathos is the appeal to emotion, and logos is the appeal to logic. By using one, two, or all of these appeals, an author can better convince an audience of his/her claims. In Gary Slutkin’s TED Talk, he used all three rhetorical appeals.
Jimmy Carter was highly involved and persuasive regarding politics. Carter had opened Georgia’s government offices to women and people of color (“Jimmy Carter”). This shows that Carter was not a biased man. He believed everyone deserved the same opportunities. Carter lacked a national political base or major backing, but was able to win the 1974 presidential election through endless campaigning (“Jimmy Carter”).
By including rhetorical devices such as analepsis and epanaphoras in her speech, women's activist, Cady Stanton in her Keynote Address manages to successfully convey her message on how the mistreatment of women's rights must come to an end. Throughout the essay, Mrs. Stanton had done an excellent job of identifying her audience and appealing to the common goal that was shared amongst one another. Due to the fact that the majority of the audience were female, Mrs. Stanton had to take an approach where her choice of words would spark a sense of empowerment rather than disenfranchise the attendees of the convention. The topic of homosexuality in Tom Hanks speech is one of great division among the people of our country, especially at the time he chose to bring attention to it, yet his use of rhetorical speaking, particularly Ethos and Pathos, assist to both mitigate and normalize a typically polarizing issue. The introduction to his speech features an immediate nod to emotion when he mentions love and his “lover”, or wife, saying “I could not be standing here without that undying love… And I have that in a lover that is so close to fine, we should all be able to experience such heaven right here on earth”. By introducing the concept of “love” as the preliminary subject before the actual meaning of the speech is made clear, a common connection is made between the audience, who includes both celebrities and the American public, that is necessary to establish due to the status that the speaker possesses. Because of this elevated status, Ethos emerges as a secondary rhetorical device that aids Tom in delivering his message.
The TED Talk by Joe Smith he talks about about a small way to reduce waste. The title of his speech is called, “How to use a paper towel” and was filmed in March 2012. In this TED Talk by Smith he talked about how to save paper towels. He wanted to clarify how much we really waste and what we can do to reduce paper towel consumption. He showed the audience a effective way to use the paper towel through a simple demonstration..
Humans’ actions and thoughts are complex, many people spend their lives researching why people act in certain ways. In the TED Talk ‘Why we do what we do’, Tony Robbins, motivational speaker and life coach, helps people understand the reasons behind their actions in order to show how they can reach their full potential and use it to help and understand others. The rhetorical and speaking strategies used in his speech aided him in his effort to reach his audience. The ethos and pathos were very strong and bolstered his message, but his attempt at being logical did not improve the quality of his speech, and affected the extent his audience will take his message to heart.
Robert Kennedy’s speech was given during a campaign rally in 1968, he broke the news to a crowd of supporters that MLK had been killed. This speech was analyzed through a PDF copy of the text. Herbivores do not only take the form of animals, but humans as well. Veganism, “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” (The Vegan Society). When people think about a vegan lifestyle, the first question, assumption or judgment is based off their diet. The food choices of a vegan have risen, deep concern, and question regarding whether or not this lifestyle is healthy or not.
