The speaker’s voice was extremely effective because she was outspoken and passionate about the subject she was speaking about. She maintained very good eye contact with the audience throughout the speech and asked questions to get people involved. John Lewis, in his speech “You must find a way to get into trouble, good trouble” (2014), argues that others shouldn’t stand in the shadows, that they should go out and make their voices heard. Lewis supports his argument by using historically accurate evidence such as referring to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. and their advocacy for civil rights; he also uses personal experiences to further his argument. To add-on, Katz made examples on how it’s easy to manipulate simple sentence structures and the violence that occurred. Similarly, he gives analogies that this violence affects men, not just women. Katz effectively uses logical arguments using what’s very common to support his argument.

Twelve Angry Men is in many ways a love letter to the American legal justice system. We see the jurors struggle between the two, seemingly conflicting, purposes of a jury, to punish the guilty and to protect the innocent. Admiral William H. Mcraven addressed the 2014 graduating class at the University of Austin, Texas with more than eight thousand students in attendance. The address given by Adm. Mcraven touched the hearts of millions from all around the world by his inspirational message of how one person can change the world if they simply helped change the lives of ten others in their lifetime. I chose this speech for my rhetorical analysis because of the simple message it portrays, how helping a few can eventually help many. Adm. Mcraven’s address was especially effective for his audience, much due to how he relates to the students by reminiscing of the day he graduated from UT while providing advice for young college graduates preparing to begin their adult lives.

Tom Hayden, the voice behind the manifesto, was a student at the University of Michigan where the speech was given at in Port Huron, Michigan. He displays dissatisfaction and unimaginable events many young people were feeling in the 1960s. He goes on to say how we were once a nation of strength and wealth, the only with the atomic bomb at our disposal, the least scarred by modern warfare, as well an initiator of western influence throughout the world (2), as if everyone in the world wanted to be like the United States. In April of 1861, the first month of the civil war, Alfred M. Green gave a speech to encourage his fellow African Americans to “prepare to enlist” and fight for the north. The north was fighting to preserve the Union and end slavery while the opposing side, the south, fought to defend slavery. Although they could not fight in the war, and did not want to, he felt that African Americans should “strive to be admitted to the ranks.” In his speech, Green uses many different methods to persuade them to join the Union forces.
Speech Analysis Each one of us can leave a mark in this world and that is all conducted by effort. This was the message that Ray Lewis conveyed to the Stanford mens basketball team in a pre game speech. He went further into stating that no one can judge effort nor see it displayed on film because everyday people have to bring it. Being ok with being mediocre is unacceptable and that the men must strive for greatness.
Former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, in his address to the nation about the Challenger explosion, distinguishes the terrifying news of the explosion of the space shuttle. Reagan's purpose is to remember the lives lost in this painful accident and to ensure that space program will keep our faith with its future in space. He adopts a sorrowful tone in order to acknowledge all the courage and breakers that those seven astronauts expressed to his nation. Reagan opens his tribute to the Challenger astronauts by recognizing that this accident delayed his State of the Union address and by showing the pain of him and his wife’s grief. He appeal to the emotions of the listeners by expressing that “today is a day for mourning and remembering” (Reagan, 1986), that he and his wife are “pained to the core” (Reagan, 1986), and that we all know that this accident is “truly a national loss” (Reagan, 1986).
