Cesar Chavez influences poor labor workers that nonviolence is the best way to make a change. The rhetorical devices Chavez uses within the article catch the workers attention and helps make them feel as if they can make a change, and of all the devices, his militant diction influences the reader most. The sixth paragraph of his article uses military diction by stating, “But if we are committed to nonviolence only as a strategy or tactic, then if it fails our only alternative is to turn to violence.” This means that if they think of nonviolence as a type of strategy instead of making it a mindset then they will become violent.
Hanson writes, “We have entered a new world of immigration without precedent. This current crisis is unlike the great waves of the nineteenth-century immigration that brought thousands of Irish, Eastern Europeans, and Asians to the United States” (566). “Today, almost a third of all foreign born persons in the United States are here illegally, making up 3 to 4 percent of the American Population” (566). Hanson states that we are in a current crisis due to immigration, but then made a clear contradiction by stating that immigrants only make up 3 to 4 percent of the American population. The definition of a crisis is a time of intense difficulty, trouble or danger.
During the 1960s in America, there were many strikes and marches for equal rights for Latino farm workers. Due to the strikes, Cesar Chavez along with Dolores Huerta founded the National Farm Workers Association to help the workers while also having a nonviolent approach to the situation. The Mexican-American and the Church by Cesar Chavez was given in March 1968. The Civil Rights Movement was a movement started by Martin Luther King and is taught in every history class around the entire nation of the United States of America. Labor Union organizer and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez published an article in-order-to promote a non-violent path to achieve his goal. The United Farm Workers and the American Indian Movement were groups that worked to improve conditions for Native Americans. Cesar Chavez compares his movement to the Civil Rights Movement because both movements supported blacks and fought for equality between whites and blacks. Cesar Chavez uses many examples of compare-and-contrast to convey his message, he compared his movement to the civil rights movement because both events benefited many United States citizens, he included well developed diction to provide clarity in his article, he used allusion to legendary figures, repetition of words and overall to appeal to the audience, not to their feelings but to their participation to the next step in shaping the world.
Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s The Undocumented Americans is a work of nonfiction that shins light on the lives and experiences of undocumented immigrants in the United States. While living a pretty rough life as a child being undocumented and having to live in the shadows, Cornejo Villavicencio shies away from preaching about her hardships and focuses more on the immigrant population in specific regions. Throughout her arguments and insightful experiences, Villavicencio adds to the bigger pictured situated around the idea of migration, challenging commonly held assumptions and stereotypes about these individuals known as immigrants. In his opinionated news article, “Ignorant Immigration Reform”, author David J. Bier asserts his opinion on a bill that will reduce the legal immigration by 50% in the United States. Bier supports his position by discussing how the bill won’t reduce immigration, stop the way immigrants are affecting the Americans wages and how they’re following Canada’s footsteps by concentrating on the skilled immigrants. Bier’s purpose is to notify the government of basic facts that they should know before making such claims, in order to bring into light what the real issue is. He writes in a very direct and sincere tone for the government and general public to inform them on false information that the government is claiming that the bill will do. Bier makes it very clear on where he stands on this issue by using credible facts, briefly explaining the opposing side's viewpoint, but he also shows that he’s very bias.
Borderlands is a concept that does not have to be seen to be considered borders and can often be placed subconsciously by ourselves. These borderlands are unsettled and unclear and are consistently changing. The famous singer Rosita Fernández was born in Mexico but spent majority of her life in San Antonio performing music. Rosita was very popular in the San Antonio music scene and eventually was inducted into both the San Antonio music hall of fame and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame. Rosita’s induction into both of these halls demonstrates her diversity border including her Texan connection as well as her Mexican connection since she is considered half Mexican and half Texan.

Bob Dane, the Executive Director of Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), believes that the immigration system is broken and in need of repair and reform.
