Who hasn't gotten advice from any living relative? The person that is receiving the advice most likely does not take it, but Dave Barry made sure his grandson would hear him by making it funny. Dave Barry uses comic language to make the letter funny, in order to make sure his grandson will read it completely. For instance, he states “ Many people believe that “light beer” is a form of beer. Many people voluntarily purchase recordings by Barry Manilow. Am I saying that all of these people are stupid? Of course not. Some of them are insane.”( Barry1). This evidence means, that Dave thinks that people that do some off the things are insane in his opinion. The additional use of the pun added to the humor of the essay, when Dave stated he doesn’t think the people are stupid but thinks they are insane. This is also a little ironic because readers would think Dave would say something nice about those people. Furthermore Dave barry also wrote about friendships, “Be loyal to your friends. Popularity is way overrated; friendship is not.” (Barry 2). This evidence shows that Dave feels Dylan should stay loyal to his friends and not go for popularity. To illustrate Dave states, “Do not be one of those people who are constantly standing up and blocking the view of the people behind them at concerts and sporting events… As a result, the people behind them have no choice but to crush their skulls with a ball-peen hammer.”(Barry 2). The above evidence illustrates that Dave hates when people stand when their not supposed to at sporting and concert events. Also the “People behind them have no choice but to crush their skulls with a ball-peen hammer,” is the hyperbole that Dave Expressed to show how much standing up at social events bothers people including Dave. Further Dave expresses to dylan to be nice and not rude. For example Dave Barry states, “Be nice to people; dont be rude… But when they’re dealing with somebody they consider to be not useful or unimportant, especially if that person pretty much has to take the abuse- an underling, a salesclerk, a waiter, a flight attendant- these people feel free to be rude.” (Barry 1) The above evidence shows Dave has some acceptance for people to be rude, but only if those people are faced with rude citizens.
