By misinterpreting and attacking the nuanced areas of the opposition’s argument, one is able to elevate his own argument while degrading that of the opposition’s. Even when an argument is sound and logical, if it contains a single unclear phrase open to interpretation that is followed by critical mockery, it appears inconsequential and foolish to an audience. Such is the case in an exchange between Richard Seaver, the Executive Vice President of the Grove Press publishing company, and Ira Herbert, an executive of Coca-Cola, regarding their common use of the marketing slogan, “it’s the real thing”. Herbert’s argument is innately logical but poorly supported and executed.
Thesis: I believe that Ehrenreich’s thesis is that no matter how hard you work or how chipper you act, it is nearly impossible to make a living for oneself in minimum wage conditions such as those of her coworkers. Narration: Narration is present on page 765 where through the narrator we are told Gail’s story about how her husband died and her what has led up to her current situation. Analysis: The section on pages 771-772 is an analysis because she is breaking down the housing situations of her coworkers based upon her prediction of their salaries.
Hochswender argument was entertaining, but he felt at persuading my discussion in his favor. The rhetorical comment that was made about driving a large four wheel drive vehicle does that make him bad (Muller & Harvey). Hochswender is promoting his self as a critic of gas guzzler vehicles but he drives one. I am not clear as to which side Hochswender really stand on with the issue. He had a logical thought out argument, but; fell to make his case in my point of view.
Both letters, by Herbert and Seaver discuss the usage of the slogan "It's the Right Thing." Each writer uses Reductum ad Absurdum and logos as their rhetorical strategies. While Herbert, executive of the Coca Cola Company, argues that the slogan is plagiarized, Seaver, representative of Grove Press, disputes the use of the slogan as it is protected by the First Amendment. Seaver has a more persuasive prose to emphasize his idea that the "It's the Real Thing" slogan is not copyrighted.

The author Richard Louv wrote an essay on the connection of nature to humans in the modern world. He expands on the fact that technology has taken away our abilities to appreciate nature for it’s true beauty. Children growing up in today’s world aren’t having the resources to appreciate nature and it’s beauty because of technology, according to him. He gives examples of the changing technology in the world: cars, mobile devices, advertisements, you name it. In Last Child in the Woods, Louv uses rhetorical devices to display his thoughts through examples and evidence.

In his passage from “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv uses various rhetorical strategies in order to make his audience more supportive of his argument. The passage discusses the connection, or really the separation, between people and nature. On this subject, Louv argues the necessity for people to redevelop their connection with nature. His use of tone, anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and factual examples all help develop the pathos and logos of his piece.
While Herbert fears that the public will confuse Coca Cola and Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher, Seaver contests this and illustrates how silly this concern actually is while joking that he will ask salespeople to “make sure…the customer wants...the book” and not a Coke. By doing this, he pokes holes in Herbert’s primary concern. Seaver then mocks the formal, corporate-based tone of Herbert’s letter by joking that after an “executive committee” and a “vote,” they will keep using the phrase, even if it benefits Coca Cola. By making this comment, he continues to reveal that the public probably never would make any connections between an advertisement for a book and Coca Cola, and if anyone did, Seaver mockingly hints that
In this passage, Ezekiel Cheever responds to John Proctor’s curiosity about what a needle in a poppet signifies and why his wife Elizabeth is being accused of using witchcraft against Abigail Williams. Cheever’s response explains his knowledge of how Abigail was afflicted, his possession of strong evidence against Elizabeth Proctor as a court official, and both his and the town of Salem’s tendency to turn to superstition to explain mysterious events. As Cheever explains how Abigail was afflicted by the needles from the poppet, he utilizes a simile when he states that Abigail fell to the floor, after being stabbed, “like a struck beast” (74). Cheever says this to emphasize the abruptness and intensity of the situation and how significant it is that there is no visual perception of anyone

Admiral William H. Mcraven addressed the 2014 graduating class at the University of Austin, Texas with more than eight thousand students in attendance. The address given by Adm. Mcraven touched the hearts of millions from all around the world by his inspirational message of how one person can change the world if they simply helped change the lives of ten others in their lifetime. I chose this speech for my rhetorical analysis because of the simple message it portrays, how helping a few can eventually help many. Adm. Mcraven’s address was especially effective for his audience, much due to how he relates to the students by reminiscing of the day he graduated from UT while providing advice for young college graduates preparing to begin their adult lives.
