Although Rex Walls was not always an admirable father and role model, he did make an essential point while teaching his daughter, Jeannette, how to swim. In life, not everything comes without resistance. As Jeannette Walls describes throughout her life story, sometimes people are forced to face hardships that make them question their whole life. However, as seen in her book, it is important to learn to take those hardships and use them to shape one’s future for the better.
Society is often content with adhering to orders and often don't question the true essence of what they’re being told. Plato ventured towards this issue within his famous “The Allegory of the Cave” by using rhetorical devices such as metaphors to illustrate his message. The piece is comprised of themes that celebrated authors still offer publications and interpretations on, and it contains a great amount of diverse rhetorical strategies that enrich an individual’s reading experience. Plato wrote this classical piece in tribute to his widely-celebrated teacher, Socrates. The story comprises of a dialogue between Socrates and Plato’s older brother, Glaucon.
For instance we can see the outrage when he mention, “It is sinful in the extreme for you to make voluntary submission.” Another time the audience can see that he is angry is when he uses the phrase ,“And worse than all, you tamely submit while your lords tear your wives from your embraces and defile them before your eyes. In the name of God, we ask you, are you men? Where is the blood of your fathers? Has it all run out of your veins?
In the essay, “The Death of the Moth”, Virginia Woolf uses metaphor to convey that the relationship between life and death is one that is strange and fragile. Woolf tells the story of the life and death of a moth, one that is petite and insignificant. The moth is full of life, and lives life as if merry days and warm summers are the only things the moth knows. However, as the moth enters it’s last moments, it realizes that death is stronger than any other force. As the moth knew life seconds before, it has now deteriorated into death.
This pathos developed plot is meant to stir the dark emotions of the soul. Poe accomplishes this by using emotional language. This was illustrated many times throughout, but the most important time is when the narrator tried to define his thoughts about the old man. The narrator says he loves the man, yet despises his evil old vulture eye. He seems to talk as if the old man were two separate beings, thus allowing him to love and hate this man.
Poe’s literary devices affects the poem because it uses personification and by using figurative language they get to know what the characters are thinking. The rhyme scheme and repetition affect the reader because it creates suspense in the poem and it makes the reader feel afraid.
At the start of Poe’s tragic poem, the speaker’s attitude towards the Raven (then the unknown knocker) was one of fear. Poe demonstrates this through his word choice in the lines “-filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;/So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating” (15-16). The speaker tries to convince himself that his fears aren’t real, that it’s just a random person knocking at his door, nothing more than that. Poe uses words like “fantastic” and “to still the beating of my heart” to create the speaker’s tone of sheer terror. These words help convey the fact of how terrified the depressed narrator is, which is why Poe used them.
Poe’s main literary device is Symbolism it’s used the most. “Back unto the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning.” In this quote he tells us he is going back in his room. The Chamber means his heart and he is getting scared. “And the Raven, never flitting still is sitting, still is sitting, on the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door.”
Greed can blind In the short story “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, the reader can conclude that this story shows a sense of greed and ungratefulness. The author uses rhetorical devices to convey this to his readers. As a reader, this story teaches me that I should never be greedy and to be thankful for what I have.
