In “What We Are to Advertisers” and “Men’s Men and Women’s Women” both Twitchell and Craig reveal how advertisers utilize stereotypes to manipulate and persuade consumers into purchasing their products. Companies label their audience and advertise to them accordingly. Craig and Twitchell give examples of this ploy in action by revealing how companies use “positioning” to advertise the same product to two demographics to earn more profit. Craig delves more into the advertisers ' plan by exposing the science behind commercials.
Amir bewedded to an Afghan woman, Soraya, but before marriage there was concern about her past. When she was younger she ran away with a man without her father's approval, which to the afghan culture was just unheard of. Soraya came back but she had brought shame to her parents for what she had done. Baba says to Amir “It may be unfair, but what happened in a few days, sometimes even in a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime…” (Hosseini 142).
Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
Thoreau’s purpose is to live a simple life. He doesn't want to live the fast life, he wants to see every detail there is and obtain everything life offers. Thoreau wanted to die knowing he lived what life was meant to be. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” This is an antithesis because Thoreau supports his decision on going into to the woods by saying if he didn't, he would regret it.
In Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, Amir watches his servent-friend Hassan get raped, all while doing nothing to help his friend. Amir has multiple chances to redeem himself in the following weeks, yet he decides not to tell anybody about what happened to Hassan. This leads to a feeling of guilt building up in Hassan. This feeling of guilt becomes a positive force in Amir’s life, as Hosseini illustrates a life of positivity in Amir’s attempt to redeem himself and rid himself of his guilt. Soon after Amir witnesses Hassan’s rape, the guilt he feels influences him to avoid Hassan while at their home.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini explicates the life of the main character Amir, and his relationship with his childhood best friend Hassan. Throughout the novel, Hosseini uses irony to show the growth and improvement of Amir’s character. Back when Amir and Hassan were little they used to be close. As children, they used to participate in Kite Fighting tournaments. One day, they went to Kabul with Amir’s father, Baba, to buy kites for the new season.
As an author, Stephen King has developed the skill of alluring writing. Stephen King’s word choice is not common, but eccentric and assists in making a story enticing to read. Alike Stephen King, W.W Jacobs also uses quality word choice and descriptive adjectives for his stories, one of them is “The Monkey’s Paw.” In “The Monkey’s Paw” W.W Jacobs uses word choice and descriptive adjectives to develop the theme.
I have chosen to create an online article about the issue of women in advertising for the “Health and Beauty” section of The Guardian. Having watched Jean Kilbourne’s documentary “Killing Us Softly 4,” I realized there is intense gender bias in our society, specifically discrimination towards women in the advertisements I would see throughout the day. Also, reading Joyce Carol Oate’s short sotry, “Where are you going, Where have you been?” helped me formulate a better understanding of how popular culture creates a singular identity. In my article, I tried to use all three of Aristotle’s rhetorical appeal techniques.
In "The Story of a Hour," Chopin utilizes particular basic and expressive methods to increase the show of great importance. The structure Chopin has decided for "The Story of a Hour" fits the topic flawlessly. The story is short, comprised of a progression of short sections, a large number of which comprise of only a few sentences. Moreover, the story covers just a single hour in Louise Mallard's life from the minute she learns of her better half's passing to the minute he out of the blue returns alive. The short, thick structure reflects the exceptional hour Louise spends thinking about her new freedom.
“Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.” This quote by Vera Nazarian sums up the reason for reading. Especially in “Shooting An Elephant”, readers can learn so much about the world and the people who live in it. For example, elocutionists learn many details about the nature of man by analyzing George Orwell’s style in this literary work. As a result of George Orwell manipulating the elements of style such as tone, pace, and character development in “Shooting An Elephant”, readers can conclude that there are many sides, or natures of men.
Why is it that we forget certain memories yet remember others so vividly? In the poem “The Myth of Music” by Rachel M. Harper it can be seen that the author implies that the relationship between music and the complex memories of her family is that music can bring back the memories that she otherwise could not remember. This can be observed in the author’s use of imagery in the poem. Harper uses imagery in the poem to reveal that music helps bring back forgotten memories of her family. This can be seen when the author gives an example of this exact situation occurring.
Around the world, people are affect by sex trafficking everyday. This is a touchy subject that is not talked about often. A YouTube Channel called “collapsefilms” attempts to display what sex trafficking is. While the advertisement aims to spread awareness of sex trafficking, it is problematic because it fails to show the whole truth of what sex trafficking actually consists of, uses stereotypical white actors, it fails to show hard facts, and it is not clear in its overall message.
