Greed can blind In the short story “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, the reader can conclude that this story shows a sense of greed and ungratefulness. The author uses rhetorical devices to convey this to his readers. As a reader, this story teaches me that I should never be greedy and to be thankful for what I have. One theme expressed in this short story is exploring the dangers of opting for a fake lifestyle through greed. The text states, “She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of becoming known, understood, loved or wedded by a man of wealth and distinction”, and “She suffered endlessly, feeling she was entitled to all the delicacies and luxuries of life.” (Maupassant 1). She wanted to rise in social status while disregarding her poor husband and everything he had done for her. I would describe Mathilde as a woman who is not accepting and is selfish. She had no expectations, not even for herself. She wanted more in life, she wanted to be sought after. She was very unhappy with the life she was living. She seemed very greedy and ungrateful for what she had. At first, when her husband tried so hard to get the invitations for the party, she was ungrateful, and she threw a fit. The text states “ "Nothing. Only I have no dress and so I can't go to this party. Give your invitation to a friend whose wife has better clothes than I do."He was distraught, but tried again””(Maupassant 2). This shows that the husband was sad that his wife declined the invitation at first because all he wanted to do was make her happy. She was not even thankful for the invitation, she just cared about what she would look like. Then her husband used his own hunting trip money that he worked hard for, to buy her a beautiful dress, and that still was not enough. When her husband gave her the four hundred frances, she did not even inquire where he got the money from, or what he was going to wear to the ball. Mathilde thought she knew what wealth was, and what it looked like. Mathilde thought the necklace was expensive because her rich friend would buy a real one just because she was rich. She thought that things are always what they seem, but they are in fact not. Mathilde did not know one thing about being wealthy because she had never had wealth. She believed that wealth was always genuine, and it is not. But the reality that this whole thing shows is that every woman at that event might have had on a fake precious jewel necklace that
