An anonymous quote states “They are not jealous of what you have.They are jealous of what they can’t have.” This quote about jealousy relates to the short stories “All summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. In Ray Bradbury's short story "All Summer in a Day," which takes place on Venus, all the students ever knew was rain, and the sun only appears every seven years for one hour. This story expresses jealousy by showing how the protagonist Margot is treated, previously remembering the sun while the other kids do not. In “The Necklace”s the text states,“She had no clothes,no jewels,nothing.And these were the only things she loved;she felt that she was made for them.She had longed so eagerly to charm,to be desired,to be wildly attractive and sought after”( de Maupassant 4).This demonstrates, that she craves what other people have not just wants it. The only things she valued were things she couldn't afford but others could. Madame Mathilde Loisel believed she was made for things that other people had but she could never get. She was unsatisfied and disappointed with her life since she believes she married beneath her.This implies, Madame Mathilde Loisel preferred her materialistic ways over being happy in her marriage and appreciating what she has. This relates to “All Summer in a Day” the author stated “ ‘Then one of them gave a little cry. “Margot!” “What?” “She's still in the closet where we locked her’ ” (Bradbury 76-79). This quote shows that Margot is different so she got bullied. She was the only one who could describe the sun as she had seen it while on Earth.
