Fear can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Never know what you can get from fear. In the talk “What Fear Can Teach Us.” By Karen Thompson. She goes on talk about how fears are teaching us things about ourselves. When fear comes to play there is a lot you can learn from it. This speech is effective for the purpose of fear teaching us, context on ideas, and is supported by stories about fear. Karen Thompson's speech, her purpose is about what fear we can learn from fear. With using context, she uses her ideas and statements about fear. Then a few days or weeks ago, it ended up happening. For example, one of her ideas is how fear can predict the future. “Once in a while, our fears can predict the future. But we can't possibly prepare for all the fears that our imaginations concoct.” (Thompson). Fear is hard to think about I hope it doesn’t happen. You can sometimes dream about having your fears come true and they could with that she talks about what kind are fears we need to listen to and starts seeing the differences between fears. The way she uses this idea to explain more about how fear can predict the future. This is one of the ideas that she uses in her writing. Thompson goes in her speech and uses rhetorical tools/support. With using support, it helps connect with the readers, so they better understand the writer’s purpose. Thompson had used a personal story to get the audience’s attention and hope they also connect to the speech. “Remember how frightening it was to see the chandelier that hung above our dining table swing back and forth during every minor earthquake, I sometimes couldn't sleep at night, terrified that the Big One might strike while we were sleeping.”( Thompson). By sharing this story, it lets readers know that everyone has gone through the same things. That she wrote to reflect on a time that help her main idea of her speech.
