Thomas Jefferson is one of the founding fathers and the third president of the United States of America. Although, many people remember him as the author of the “Declaration of Independence”. In this document, Jefferson states that a government who doesn’t protect its people right should be changed. King George of England had imposed many unjust laws in the colonies. He had taken away the colonies rights. The colonist wanted nothing more to do with the king, so they declare their independence. The colonies knew that this would start a war, but he document was still sent to King George. He needed to show a solution to the problem which he did. He stated, “We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States”(Jefferson 265). This was Jefferson claim since the king refuses to listen to them they were going to abolish the government and start a new one. This was at the end of “The Declaration of Independence.” so the reader had the chance to read all the reason why they were declaring themselves independent. The reader saw how the king was treating the colonist and how he did take away their rights away. Jefferson told the reader that a government is meant to protect the rights of its citizen.
