After being victims of numerous restrictive laws placed on them by the British, many colonists wanted to break free from the English. As a result, the colonists declared war on the British. When the fighting concluded, the newly formed nation was experiencing a time of change. Laws and acts coming from the time period would serve as a precedent and model for much of the actions and characteristics of America. Between the years 1754 and 1812, the United States was evolving into a strong and developed nation.By the start of the Revolutionary War, most Americans were educated just enough to read the newspaper and the Bible, and do their taxes. Another reason for this shift to a more secular purpose of education was the lack of funding from the British. After the Americans defeated the British in the war(s), the British saw no reason to put any money into America, and withdrew all of its financial support. Educated people are needed to make a country run.Similar to Pennsylvania, other states, like New York, also decided that change was necessary. In 1805, the New York Public School Society was created. Run by wealthy businessmen, this program sought to provide education for the poor and was paid for by wealthy businessmen. The philanthropic organization taught on the Lancasterian model, whereby one older student is taught the material and he teaches it to other students. Programs like this and a new desire for education, promised to bring much change to the current education system.A major theme of education during this time period was the expansion of education. While efforts were being made to expand the education system’s “audience”, efforts were also being made to expand schools westward. The government began surveying lands and setting up schools inside them. They wanted to spread education to the entire country. Along with this idea, Noah Webster believed that sectional differences between regions should be reduced. Education should be the same for everyone.
