Rhetorical Analysis: Tolerance and Peace Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic Nun who devoted her life to God and helping those who were less fortunate. Although she spent time all around the world, Mother Teresa was known for her work in Calcutta. Furthermore she also founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. She had been recognized numerous times for her work in attempting to overcome distress in our world by helping those less fortunate. Her “Love Begins at Home” speech was given after her Nobel Peace Prize Award, giving gratitude and showing her thanks for receiving such an honorable award. This technique immediately established her credibility and established a strong emotional connection with her audience. Beginning her speech with this prayer shows the audience that she is knowledgeable and aware of her spirituality. They can see that she is undoubtedly familiar with the bible and the situations presented around this prayer when it was established. She states “…4,500 years ago as St. Francis of Assisi composed this prayer that they had the same difficulties that we have today, as we compose this prayer that fits very nicely for us also”, which further demonstrates her vast knowledge about this faith. Furthermore, her knowledge of the Catholic faith is also demonstrated. Her use of a prayer grabs her listener’s attention spiritually and allows them to settle their minds as she began her prayer and continued on with her speech. The use of St. Francis of Assisi’s prayer also implemented the rhetorical appeal of pathos. Religion can be a sensitive topic to individuals and the prayer used in the beginning of her speech could have a strong spiritual and emotional connection to those in the audience.
