As Dolly Parton once said “You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try”. In this story Rikki went against the dangers of the garden. He fought snakes and he saved the garden. I feel like the author’s theme in this story is bravery and courage. Rikki is the main character in the story.

He feels the need to help his family, when the other man of the house is unable to do the task of finding the cows. The crops have also been poor in their region, “We too… [have] poor crops lately. That [is] why it is so important that I find the [cows], (192). Without these cows it will be difficult for his family to survive, so any small sign, like possibly seeing the cows on the horizon is good enough for the boy to pursue looking for them even closer. The boy also has some hallucinogenic dreams, where he hears animals talking to him, but he also sees the man act ‘crazy’ while playing chess.

They sailed from the coast of South America all the way to a small system of polynesian islands. Not only was this expedition recorded in writing it was also recorded on videotape and subsequently turned into a documentary which went on to win an oscar. Thor Heyerdahl took on this expedition to try and prove that the native people of South America could have settled in Polynesia.
He creates a playful tone towards the harsh environment described in the short story. He describes the lifelike house as if it were a simple minded living being. For example he gave the house features of repetition and used phrases like, “it repeated the date three times for memory 's sake!”. His choice of words are charming and lighthearted rather than unpleasant to the ear. He continues to use these such words throughout even when he begins to talk of the sick scene.
