The Rise of Censorship
Censorship is a common part of man today, however, is it really necessary? The truth is that censorship is an abolishment of “inappropriate” content, based on the opinions of school districts and parents. Censorship is a better idea for children, however, young adults have the maturity level that is needed to read any book of their preference. Let me ask you, if so many parents trust their children why is censorship such a big deal?
According to a 2011 report from the American Library Association, “U.S. schools have banned more than 20 books and faced more than 50 other challenges this year, and many more are expected this fall.” However, it may just be parental protection against these books. Censorship has grown into so much more than a few books that young adults are not able to read. In this era many books are censored from young adults, however many young adults are mature enough to read a book that is usually censored.
Catherine J. Ross, a professor at George Washington University law School, believes that students and young adults have the freedom to read any book they prefer (Ross). It is the students’ and young adults’ freedom and right to read any prefered book.
Two new ratings to book review codes have been added to help readers choose their book easier and faster. The new ratings are, NA- New Adult and R- Reluctant Reader. These new ratings distribute the books into more specific groups (Vigdor/Scales). As a young reader I would personally choose the young adult category. The books included in this might be novels and Historical/ science fiction. These new ratings help newer readers choose books at their level of
