Even though censorship has been around for centuries, some may think that it has been eradicated. In this day and age, it 's running rampant, especially in young adult literature. In 2014, 331 books were challenged. A lot of the books that were censored or challenged were by parents, public libraries, private and public schools. 35% were challenged by parents. The reasons those books were challenged is because the topics of homosexuality, suicide, being sexually explicit, drugs/smoking/alcohol, and being unsuited for the age group. Sex in young adult literature is a very ever-present topic, it 's more common in contemporary young adult literature. Children learn about sex from a young age, they can understand the difference between boys and girls and what’s happening to their bodies. This isn 't something that children don’t learn about in schools, there’s even a specific class for it. In this day in age things of the sexual nature aren’t as taboo as they used to be, with popular books like The 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy by E.L. James. While 50 Shades is not a young adult novel it still opens up young adults and youth to the topic of it. Popular books with sex and things of the sexual nature in young adult literature are A Court of Thorns and Roses Series by Sarah J. Mass and the Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. In the Court of Thorns and Roses books a girl named Feyre is hunting in the woods and accidentally kills a wolf to feed her family, that wolf turns out to be a mythical creature called fae. Then she is taken from her home by the High Lord of the Spring Court, Tamlin. Feyre and Tamlin fall in love and she’s thrust into this beautiful world that she 's been told so many lies about. But then a wicked shadow grows over the beautiful land and an old enemy comes back and Feyre has to stop it. There is a group called The Program and if you show signs of suicide they take you away to their facilities and you come back “normal”. The main character is named Sloane and she lost her brother to suicide and she and her boyfriend James are trying to keep each other out of The Program, but then one day Sloane gets hauled away and she has to go be in The Program. Sloane figures out the truth behind The Program, mind altering pills and lobotomies. Nothing like it should be to help suicidal people. Sloane escapes and her and James are on the run from The Program. (Young, Suzanne) This novel has a great idea, it treats suicide like an epidemic. Suicide kills 4,600 young adults a year, that is 4,600 too many, I believe that suicide is becoming an epidemic and it’s a very serious problem that needs to be handled differently.
