Everyone has a different opinion on why they should be able to read a certain book, but adults are drawn away from young adult literature for many reasons. The content 40 years ago went undescribed, whereas today, everything is spelled out and goes into stomach-clenching detail (Young Adult Literature para. 1). The profanity that is used within the books is unremarkable, leaving teenagers believing that it is okay to do whatever characters do. According to parents, young adult books today portray life challenges to children in a traumatizing way dwelling on circumstances for an extensive period of time. Many writers are saying that adolescents are “starving”, but adults are yet to believe that that teenagers are begging to read about violence and hardships (Young Adult Literature para. 3). …show more content…

They believe that the images of violence and suffering behaviors leave long lasting impressions adolescents (Young Adult Literature para. 4). They think that the behaviors from characters are then being portrayed by teenagers throughout their daily lives and sometimes they even go as far as doing the same actions that the characters do in the books. Gossip Girl has been a hot topic for being a bad influence on children because the characters are horrible role models. According to "Young Adult Literature: Is Current Young Adult Literature Appropriate for Teen Readers?", Tina Harden, a parent in Longwood Florida said, “The whole book was filled with everything I don’t want my daughter to do or be,” (para.9). Adults want teenagers to have happy and tender hearts, but they are afraid that by giving them these references their behaviors will change and they will look at the world
