In 610 CE A man named Muhammad was outside of a cave meditating and soon began hearing voices. As he listened he heard them say “Give birth to a religion called Islam.” Islam began to spread faster than any other religion. Other religions disagreed with this because they didn’t want to believe that Islam was bigger and better than their religion. After about 140 years, many followers of Islam had created an empire that ruled the Middle East and spread across to North Africa to Europe.
Why did Islam spread so quickly? “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet.” This is the most important belief in the monotheistic religion of Islam. Muslims, those who follow this religion, have believed this since 622 C.E. The religion was established by Muhammad, in present-day Mecca. Mecca is located in the Arabian Peninsula, but now that is not the only place the religion is practiced and followed.
Immigrants in the 1930s all across America struggled with their journeys to hope and redemption. The main purpose for chapter three, which depicted a turtle struggling to cross a highway, was to outline the struggle that the immigrants faced as they took their journey to a new destination where they would spend the rest of their lives, as well as sticking with those who could help them through this long, enduring excursion. Hopefully, when they reached those endpoints, they would have a new job and a life worth living. The Joad family, a family of farmers and the family depicted in The Grapes of Wrath, repeatedly have to go through events that could potentially throw them off course far enough to have no hope for returning to their former glory.

Islam is a religion that was established by a man named Muhammed and means ‘submission.’ As sources say, an angel approached Muhammad while he was meditating in a cave; and told him about the word of Allah, the only God. After Islam was born, and the word of the angel was the beginning of the Qur’an. Islam was established as a monotheistic religion, as Muslims would only believe in one God, and was first preached by Muhammad. Islam grew, and eventually, the first Muslim community was developed in Medina, a city in Saudi Arabia.
The spread of Islam began when the prophet Muhammad received the word of god and believed it was his obligation to spread his religion. He gained many followers but eventually dies in the city of Mecca. By that time his religion already grew at an extensive amount, and soon Muslim empires were created, which extended Islam's political and religious power. Many factors such as trade routes and the person named Mansa Musa, contributed an enormous amount to the spread of Islam throughout parts of Asia, North and West Africa, and parts of Europe. The Islamic Empires did a lot of work themselves to help spread their religion.

Many Americans are unaware of the flourishing religion that is Islam. In America, Muslims only make up about 1% of the population, however, a survey put the global muslim population at a shocking 1.6 billion, adding up to roughly 23% of the global population. Christianity reached a total of 2.2 billion followers, encompassing only 32% of the population, while Judaism fell far behind with only 14 million and a devastatingly low 0.04%. Originating in the seventh century in Mecca, the powerful religion has seen rapid growth over the years. Innovative ideas in economics, religion, and science made the religion unique from others in the past and allowed for this spread.
On pages 222 is a map of the Muslim travel pattern over the Byzantine and Persian Empires. However, on page 283 there is a map of Islamic conquests over a short period. Both reveal the spread of Islamic religion went very fast with the amount of conquering taking place before 1500 AD. The main key factor was, "...admitting non-Arabs to the faith and about maintaining the cultural distinction between conquerors and conquered" (Morillo, p. 221) By keeping a distinct difference between the Muslim Arabs and non-Muslim Arabs was important.
From 1000 C.E. to 1750 C.E., both trade and advances in art and science were greatly impacted by an Islamic presence in Europe. However, war continuously occurred between regions of Islamic faith and European territories. Despite Europe’s apparent aversion to Islam influence over trade via the Indian Ocean trade route, economically, Islam greatly impacted this system. The Islam religion dominated the Indian Ocean trade route, or the “Sea Roads”, partially due to its location.
Islam is the second biggest religion and fastest growing in the world today. Throughout the Muslim Golden Age, which flourished from the 9th – 12th centuries, many brilliant Muslims made spectacular contributions that still greatly impact society today. Islamic achievements and contributions have helped other cultures adopt new ideas and make great advancements in an immense variety of fields. These fields include medicine, architecture, banking, art, literature, astronomy, and several others. These achievements have assisted in making daily life for the Muslims and even us today a great deal easier. Of all of these achievements, those involving the establishment of a banking system, the development of hospitals, and the development of herbal medicines and pharmacies are among the three that I feel are the most important and influential contributions to the world today.
