African-American in the late 1800s and early in the 1900s were socially, politically and economically restricted from participating in the Southern state. Although, slaves were abolished in the 1865, even though they were free and escape the brutality in the South, their rights of human being were still taking away from them. They were given little right such as owning property in specific area. African-American could sue, be sued and testify in court only involving other African-Americans. They were given the right to get marry, however, they could not interact or have an relationship outside of race.
How were captives treated during their journey otherwise known as the Middle Passage? The Middle Passage refers to the journey in which Africans were transported across the Atlantic to the West Indies as slaves and were then sold or traded for raw materials. Due to the fact that Africans were considered as less than human, the conditions they were forced to endure during the Middle Passage were appalling. Evidently, the conditions varied by ship and voyage, yet the same problems arose; disease, abuse, lack of food and water as well as inadequate living conditions.
During the early 1800’s, President Thomas Jefferson effectively doubled the size of the United States under the Louisiana Purchase. This set the way for Westward expansion, alongside an increase in industrialism and overall economic growth. In fact, many citizens were able to thrive and make a better living in the agricultural business than anywhere else. All seemed to be going well in this new and ever expanding country, except for one underlying issue; slavery. Many African Americans were treated as the lowest of the classes, even indistinguishable from livestock.

Stephens referred to slavery as the “cornerstone” of southern life just as many of the southern plantation owners also thought like South Carolina plantation owner Thomas Drayton who said "We are fighting for home & liberty. Langston Hughes was a very famous poet but also a dreamer during the 1920s when discrimination and racism were main problems in the society. He was a civil right activist who proposed the idea of equal opportunities between all races by writing poems, books, and playwrights; many of his famous literatures affected Americans in many crucial ways. Hughes’s main idea against the society was equality however he discovered that it is difficult to change people’s “norms” and stereotypes. Therefore, his humorous and serious type of writing effectively appealed to many audiences which eventually played a big role of achieving racial equality and equal opportunities.
The culture of most blacks was unwanted during this time. For this reason Hughes desired to make a change and illustrate such cultural identities in his poems. In doing this he caused a shift in ideas among all people. Although the change didn’t happen immediately it did eventually occur. With that said the African American people were given less of an opportunity at jobs, schooling, and most importantly culture.

But you state that we are in a post-racial society, so how can we trust that you understand African American heritage if you don’t understand the present times. Do not tell me that we are “post-racial” just because the white man traded in ropes on trees for bullets in guns and the white hoods for blue uniforms. Do not tell me that we are “post-racia”l when the white man makes up 72% of drug users while the black man makes up 60% of drug prisoners. Do not tell me that we are “post-racial” until you explain why the black man does time for the white mans crime.
John C. Gardner once said “History never looks like history when you are living through it.” For the people who lived during the Juneteenth, Jim Crow South, and even slavery they may have never believe that their lives would be recognized on this trail. For many of them I’m sure it was no easy road, but today we honor their legacy with not only this trail but by preserving their legacy by teaching the youth about their triumphs and accomplishments during such a strenuous time for African American individuals. I began my journey through the African American Heritage trail with the Basilica of Immaculate Conception. The site itself was keeper of records for births, deaths, and origins of Spanish, African, and French ancestors.
