The day with the Indian woman had been fruitful and full of wonder Rob learnt through the sunny day never to judge a book by its cover because she wasn’t as fair as the ladies back in England. She was so healthy even though she had the fading of pockmarks and walking past a mass grave on the indigenous people who were stricken down with the foreign disease. Eventually the shadows drifted across the ground. Rob saw Tom shiver a boy of 10 the same age as him. Rob could feel goose bumps raise up on his skin. He could see the mans white eyes in the dark they looked predatory he raised the spear and tom could see the ripples in his large arms. The Spear was about to pierce Robs chest when he heard the woman say to them, ‘Wirray!’ as she pulled away from them. As the man was about to strike them with the spear the kindly woman jumped in front of him and in a soft and calm voice said something only he could understand. The man, with his weapon still raised hesitantly, backed away into the night. The woman turned back to them and softly said, ‘Gibirrgang,’ as she faded into the night. Rob heard Tom yell something to her, but he didn’t listen, as he was felt disappointment about probably never seeing her again as she was a blessing in disguise. The boys walked up the hill. Rob could see a lamp shining from his father’s home indicating he was waiting for them. With a euphoric feeling Rob heard the words, ‘Did that really happen?’ fall from his lips in a hushed tone.
