Robert Frost, born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco to Isabelle Moodie and William Prescott Frost, Jr., is known for his works of poetry as well as the influence he had on present-day poetry. He was “the most recognized American poet in the twentieth century.” It was not until 1912 that Frost became a full-time poet. Before that time, he was a teacher living out of Derry, New Hampshire. Although plagued with loss and grief, Frost pushed through and made a successful life for himself and his family. Robert Frost is an American poet who had his first poem, “My Butterfly: An Elegy,” published in March of 1894 by a publishing company called The Independent Lawrence. Once his first poem was published, he realized he needed to make a decision on whether he wanted to continue teaching or devote all of his time to just poetry. People today still read his work. One specifically that Frost is known for by high school students is “The Road Not Taken.” It is an inspirational poem persuading one to take the road less traveled. Robert Frost, though successful, did not have it easy growing up. His father died of tuberculosis in 1885 when he was eleven years young. Five short years later in 1900, Frost’s mother, Isabella, died of cancer. The loss of both parents not only had a major impact on his life, but on his sister’s life as well. Frost, in 1920, had to put his sister, Jeanie, in a mental hospital to help with her depression. The weight of the grief weighed so heavily on Jeanie that she never left that hospital, and it is in fact where she died nine years later. Depression had a way of showing up throughout Frost’s life. Not only did his parents and sister experience it, but also so did his wife and one of six of his children. He was survived by only two of his children, Lesley and Irma.
