Who knew loneliness would help a young child find a place for comedy in his life. Robin Williams had a rough upbringing due to his peers, he was constantly told he wasn’t good enough , but finally he was noticed and he changed his whole life around. Robin Williams impacted the comedy world because of his resilience to get to the top.
From the beginning, Robin Williams was never accepted by his peers. He was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, and with a father who traveled for work, he constantly switched schools and was continually bullied (“Robin Williams”). Although wanting to go to Princeton or Yale, Williams got the chance to go to Juliard School, in New York, where he practiced his acts and became friends with Christopher Reeves (“Robin Williams”). At Juilliard teachers began to tweak his unique act and take away what everyone loved about him, his humor. Williams’s teachers eventually gave up on trying to change him and were going to make him take freshman classes again. After that Williams had had enough at left Juilliard. Back home in California, he met Valerie Velardi at a comedy club. They hit it off and Velardi helped him perfect his act while they fell in love. They then had to make a choice, to stay in San Francisco or move to Los Angeles, and in 1976 they moved to Los Angeles (Wukovits). The two would end up getting married and having a child named Zachary. But due to Robin being involved with other women they got a divorce (“Robin Williams Biography”). Their love at the time was strong and moving to Los Angeles together seemed like the best decision. Once in Los Angeles, he was offered a contract for $1,500 a week and his name was becoming more known. (Wukovits). Although he was shot down by professionals he was again didn’t give up and moved to Los Angeles to jump start his career. But, little did he know, this was the beginning to a long road of success.
