Robin Wilson: A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not Likely Media thrives on successfully manipulating the emotions of its audience; as a result, unordinary stories are brought to light far more often. Such is the case with the topic of student debt. Graduates shackled to large student debt years after their diploma have more coverage than those who are well in control of their repayments. Why would articles and newscasts on college graduates routinely handling their repayments with generate return customers? Accounts of those deeply in debt induces sympathy and stirs up anger in their audiences, and with the repetitive exposure to similar situations presented by the media, student-loans are commonly viewed as money leeches overtaking American …show more content…

In fact, Wilson states, “some students enroll in high-priced for-profit programs only to learn later that their certificates or degrees are not as useful on the job market as they had expected” (pp 263-4). Many students would surely need a loan to afford a for-profit degree, and that loan would need to be significantly higher than what would be needed in a public or private college. Furthermore, the devalued for-profit degree makes it far more difficult to secure a job that will compensate for the loan. If public or private college is not reasonable, then Addison’s community college is a much wiser decision than a for-profit institution. Who is to say that success cannot result from actively pursuing a career (internships, apprenticeships, etc.) rather than pursuing a college experience that may not be beneficial? It is critical to not confuse this, however, with Wilson’s fear that both the college path and career path remain unexplored. Not going to college definitely does not mean an easy way out; as much dedication is required as would be in school, as well as proper circumstances.
