Scene Ⅰ : The scene starts with Roderigo and Iago are arguing in the streets of Venice. Roderigo is paying Iago to help him win Desdemona over. There has not been any progress and he finds out the Desdemona married Othello. Iago makes known that he does not like Othello because he promoted Cassio to the position of lieutenant, which Iago has been trying to get. Iago “faithfully serves” Othello until he can get his revenge. Iago convinces Roderigo to cause problems in the marriage by upsetting Desdemona’s father, Brabantio. They call out that there have been thieves and that Brabantio’s daughter and stuff is gone. Brabantio thinks that it is another scheme for Roderigo to try to win his daughter and dismisses them. They are interrupted by a sailor arriving and announcing that the Turkish fleets have turned towards another island owned by Venice, Rhodes. A senator says “This cannot be, by no assay of reason: ‘t is a pageant to keep us in false gaze. When we consider the importancy of Cyprus to the Turk…” (page 10, line 18). Another messenger enters to tell them that the Turk went to Rhodes to combine forces and retrace their path to Cyprus. They are then interrupted again by Brabantio, Othello, Iago, Roderigo, and some officers. Brabantio puts a hold on the state business and demands attention to his problem, saying that his daughter was stolen from him with the use of potions and witchcraft. The Duke is eager to take his side until he learns that the accused man is Othello then proceeds to let Othello explain himself. Othello admits to marrying Desdemona but denies the potions and witchcraft and claims that Desdemona will support him. He explains that Brabantio would invite him over often and would ask of his life. Desdemona would listen in and dropped subtle hints with Othello. She fell in love with him through his stories. The Duke dismisses Brabantio’s claim of thievery. Desdemona and Iago enter with attendants and Brabantio asks his daughter who she owes the most obedience to. Othello sends a servant down to dismiss the musicians and Cassio asks the servant to get Emilia to speak with him so he can get access to Desdemona. Iago enters and tells Cassio that he will ask for Emilia and figure out a way to speak with Othello so that Cassio can speak with Desdemona privately. Iago leaves and Emilia enters. Emilia tells Cassio that Othello and Desdemona have been conferring about his case. Desdemona pleads with Othello for Cassio but Othello is worried that Montano’s influence would make it impractical to reinstate Cassio. Emilia allows Cassio to enter and tells him to wait for
