The overall tone she uses towards the notion is somewhat disgust and contempt. She describes the matter as “there are worrying signs that battle to put gender and sexuality at the forefront of all teaching and learning is going too far.” The use of scare quotes throughout the piece suggest that the words should not be taken at face value. It is often used to suggest disbelief or actual disagreement with the words as they are being used, as if the words don’t actually exist. Examples comprise “cisgenderism”, “heterosexism”, “transgender” and “gender dysphoria”, all of which are genuine words in the oxford dictionary.

Dr. Andrea Ayvazian); author of “Interrupting the Cycle of Oppression: The Role of Allies as Agents of Change”; many of us feel overwhelmed when we consider the many forms of systemic oppression that are so pervasive in American society today. We become immobilized, uncertain about what actions we can take to interrupt the cycle of oppression and violence that intrude on our everyday lives. According to (Merriam Webster); oppression, is treating someone unjustly; or cruelly exercising authority or power; weighing down body and mind (www.merriam-webster.com). Some strategies that can be used to enrich children’s understanding and respect for cultural identities within the services community may include: - • providing activities and opportunities that engage other cultures These activities could be a culture celebration for a day or week such as Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day, Christmas etc., where the children could come dressed up as something that represents that particular culture i.e. dragon, leppricon, Noah etc. and play games that originated from that culture, do drawings of things found in that culture or read books at story time that give information and embraces the culture. • engaging parents and families to discuss cultural practices.
The Little Rock Nine was a group of teenager chosen to integrate Central High, which is in Little Rock, Arkansas. The group consists of three guys, named Ernest Green, Jefferson A. Thomas, and Terrence Roberts. The girls of the group were Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Thelma Mothershed, Gloria Karlmark, and Melba Pattillo Beals. Ernest Green was a senior when he started at central, he was the first African-American student to graduate from Central High. They commonly faced challenges of the segregationists.
African American women not only perform duties traditionally performed by men, such as cleaning homes and working in fields, but they also fulfill the role of women by having children. Therefore, do they not deserve the same rights as men? If men can do this, and so can women, are they not equal? The appeal to logic that Truth applies is difficult to argue against, thus using it is extremely effective. Diversity Event on Privilege This diversity week I attended a seminar about acceptance and privilege, which was run by the members of the student senate. The meeting was interesting because it was run by my peers, and they incorporated many different cool aspects into their presentation. They opened the meeting up by us playing an ice breaker called Entourage where we all walked around playing rock, paper, scissor shoot while we walked around getting to know each other.
Privilege gives power that accrue members of a dominant group, oppressing the marginalized group. It pushes the dominant people up, while oppressing the minors. Oppression can be prejudicing and/or discriminating a certain group who are below the privilege people. Additionally, intersectionality can play a role between privilege and oppression. Intersectionality privileges a certain race, identity, or sex, but belittles the opposite of race, identity, or sex.
Power, privilege, and oppression is a rather controversial matter to talk about it in today’s society. It happens everywhere, but people always like to ignore it. Power is the ability to control or influence somebody. Privilege is when a group has trait or advantage over another group, denying others because of who they are. Oppression is rejection or treating others unfairly.
Disparities and Discrimination in US Criminal Justice System The US justice system is marred with instances of high degree discrimination and disparities and these stems from unprecedented poor management of the civil law in the country. Judging by the nature of historical injustices that have defined the criminal justice system, it goes without mentioning that, the confusion’s genesis is in the law itself and racial incarceration of the minority colored groups by the majority whites. Definition of the two terms is based on differences but the deviations are based on either legal terms or social, economic and political basis for the other. The degree of difference is highly unrecognizable but then it is clear that where disparity exists discrimination
Racial oppression is mind boggling and a social wonder. It is mostly an innovation that was made to attempt Europe 's strive to colonize and conquer the world appear like an individual process wherein "dominant" white races would command "mediocre" non-whites. The slave exchange was significant for the development of race by making a feeling of disgrace and a confidence in the natural contrasts between white Europeans and Africans. In the United States, a racial request was borne during a revolt in seventeenth century Virginia, when the non-whites associated together to battle for their rights.
Being a racial minority or being of lower social status directly influences your health and longevity. For example, in the United States life expectancy at birth for whites is 79 years compared to for African-Americans who have a life expectancy of 75.3 years (Conley, 423). Being a racial minority can decrease your life expectancy and your health purely based off from the stress. Minorities face racism every day in today's society and whether it be blatant or subliminal can still cause a lot of stress. This stress comes in school, workplace, and extracurricular activities especially in areas where they are a strong minority.
Being a racial minority or of lower social status, health and longevity could be effected because they may not have the money or insurance necessary to cover medical expenses. People in lower social status situations typically are low income families and do not have insurance. Without medical insurance, these people are unable to maintain healthy lifestyles. They do not receive preventative care which can negatively impact their longevity. People in lower income families also can not afford to eat properly.
In today 's society, numerous occurrences indicate that minorities are still being oppressed by the lawmakers of society. A few black people feel that the oppression years have passed; however, a vast majority believes that the world is concealing their true intentions of continued oppression. Barack Obama made history by becoming this country’s first black male president. However, we still have a horde of issues to tackle before achieving equality. It breaks my heart to learn of the countless deaths of minorities by police officers without holding them accountable.
According to merriam-webster.com, the definition of glass ceiling is “an unfair system or set of attitudes that prevents some people (such as women or people of a certain race) from getting the most powerful jobs”. As many people know, women tend to get paid less when referring to corporate and/or office jobs; being a colored woman, I wanted to be stay informed on the topic and changes that can possibly occur to break this glass ceiling. Therefore, I went and sat in on a lecture that took place on October 14th lead by a representative from the campaign, All In Together. The All In Together campaign is a collaboration-driven campaign to empower women with the tools they need to drive meaningful change.
