Role Of Church In Medieval Times

In medieval times the church was at the centre of their lives. Everyone would go to Sunday mass when the more spiritual went on the weekdays. Obviously in that era they didn’t have the advanced technology that we have today so they turned to God for salvation. The church gave the people something to believe in and gave structure to their lives. The church also acted as a government in some part of Europe. Some of the more devoted ones would go on and practise the monastic lifestyle, go on pilgrimages or even take part in the crusades to fight for their holy lands. Monastic comes from the Greek word alone. It is also known as monkhood, which is a religious way of living where one devotes him or her to spiritual work only. In monkhood if you are a female you would be called a nun however if you are a male you are called a monk. These monks and nuns all live somewhere called a monastery so they can stay away from the non-religious world. These peoples most important job would be praying at the churches service because it was thought that their prays would help people enter heaven when they die. They would also assist the poor by helping the sick and old in their hospitals. …show more content…
