Role Transition: The Importance of Obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree
It is extremely important to me to have an advanced degree. “Nurses who earn their BSN, however, gain the additional benefit of having education and time dedicated to nursing best practices and nursing leadership and management” (Flavin, 2018). Obtaining my BSN opens the door to my continued academic and professional success. As a BSN prepared nurse, I will not only be able to further my education, but I will also have greater opportunities for professional growth and development. I plan to take my career into two directions. I want to teach future nurses and am going to obtain a Master’s in Nursing Education. My professors and educations in my associate’s program had a tremendous impact on me. They not only shared their knowledge, but they also shared themselves. I am competent because they were vested in setting a solid nursing foundation. I had the confidence to pursue my first-choice specialty and hospital because the staff in my program gave me tremendous support and poured into me as a student, and I want to have the same impact on future students. I also want to have a change to my role in the health care team in the NICU and expand my scope of practice by becoming a provider. I am going to do this by becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. My experience in my facility has shown me that continued expansion of education and skills has not been overlooked. One of the reasons I believe my unit, who has very few ASN/ADN trained nurses, gave me the opportunity to grow in the NICU, my most desired specialty, was my commitment to continuing my education, and they have been supportive of my efforts.
