Although slavery was abolished, there was still segregation and blacks were treated poorly. A good example is Roll of Thunder. In Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry, there was no school bus for the black students. There was also a low quality school for the black students, with hand-me-down stuff from the white school. In order for the blacks to go shopping without being “hurt”, they had to go on a day-long trip out of town. Not just that, though. White folks would just pick on the black folks. An example of the blacks not being treated right is when the Berry’s were burned. White folks decided to burn them because one of them was flirting with a white customer at the store. Also, while at Strawberry, they had to get stuff at a store, but the man behind the counter kept putting them off to the side to help white customers (Taylor). The racism and other “fun” stuff was absolutely terrible in this time. In the 1960s, there was very little to no segregation. But, blacks still weren’t being treated right or equally. Racism hasn’t gotten better. If anything, it’s gotten worse. Innocent black people are being shot by cops because they “look suspicious”. But, there are people trying to fix it, and many protests. The main thing is that racism isn’t just about blacks. There’s also racism against Muslims, even white people. I can back this up because when you go on social media, under “#BlackLivesMatter”, there’s a high possibility you will see something along the lines of “I woke up this morning wanting to stab me a white person” (dre) or “I wanna shoot all these white girls in the face.” (Char Char).There’s many more too. You might be able to guess that those tweets are from black people with the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Racism is no longer about just blacks, IT’S EVERY RACE!
