Essa 10th Honors English Mr McCullough Frederikke Siggaard February 5, 2024 Edith Wharton's Themes and Motives Edith Wharton explores the complexities of human relationships and the constraints of societal expectations in works including Ethan Frome and Roman Fever. In these stories, Warton delves into the themes of societal norms, forbidden desires, and the weight of repressed emotions. She uses her concerns about the limitations imposed by society on individuals, especially women during the late 19th century to the early 20th century to shed light on how they were treated. Her use of metaphors in both stories makes us read between the lines to get the full picture. She delves into the intricacies of societal expectations, forbidden desires, and
Which Roman Legacy Has Had The Greatest Impact On Today's Society? Many parts of today's society have been affected by the legacy of Rome. More importantly, today's laws and philosophies have been influenced by Ancient Rome. Roman law, citizenship, and philosophies have affected the way we live today.
Ancient Rome 's influence cannot be exaggerated. The English language, government, and culture – from basics such as alphabet and calendar to more sophisticated legal systems – are so heavily saturated with Roman features that it is impossible to imagine what the world would be like if Rome had not prospered. In this essay, I have tried to include the most interesting facts relating to the entire Roman period. The first aspect is the army.
In Edith Wharton’s short stories “The Other Two” and “Roman Fever,” it could be argued that that statement Wharton is making about women is that they will do whatever is necessary to be successful. Alice Waythorn of “The Other Two” is currently in her third marriage and she wants to make her husband happy, so she complies with his requests. However, she obeys his desires so well without any opposition that Mr. Waythorn notices and proceeds to change his requests. Nevertheless, Alice follows Mr. Waythorn’s new requests as well because she wants her marriage to prosper. For Alice, to be successful, her current marriage must not end in divorce so she’s willing to make her husband happy, but not herself happy, by doing whatever he wants.
Joshua Brown HUM 1020 Gladiator (2000) The movie “Gladiator by Ridley Scott” was the contemporary representation of Roman empire contains views of betrayal, leadership, and politics. The movie general plot was to present a Roman. Ancient Rome was duplicated in “Gladiator as the most powerful empire on Earth. “The film is loosely based on real events that occurred within the Roman Empire in the latter half of the 2nd century AD” (Griffin).
Two interesting genres are short stories and dramas. Both genres are very similar in the elements they contain. For example, both short stories and plays contain a setting, theme, plot, characters, have a set point of view, and usually a conflict. However, these genres differ in the author’s purpose, the literary experience gained from it, and the overall format of each. One short story “A jury of her Peers”, written by Susan Glaspell, correlates with the play or drama called “Trifles”, also written by Susan Glaspell.
Mod 4-C Short Story vs The Novel The novel and the short story have been two opponents of each other since the dawn of the story. They have been battling as two ways to learn about stories. One is a pitchers duel, and every at-bat changes the outcome of the game. However, the short story is like a walk-off homerun!
Every action taken and every choice made has the possibility of altering the path one takes in life in either a negative or positive way. This principle is shown in Edith Wharton’s short story Roman Fever and I am able to connect with the principle through my choice of becoming friends with Tayler Daniel. Becoming friends with Tayler has positively influenced my involvement in church, shaped my plans during free time, and given me a life-long friend. Just as one simple letter and the choices made by it altered the lives of Grace Ansley and Alida Slade in Roman Fever, choosing to go on a mission trip to Pryor, Oklahoma altered my life. Long periods of time spent with a small amount of people will either draw the group together or tear the group apart; my time in Pryor, Oklahoma drew me closer to the six other teenagers on the trip and one of those teenagers was Tayler Daniel.
Pax Romana, known as the Roman peace period in Latin terms, and what most people today refer to it as, was an influential era for the Roman Empire. Pax Romana was a period of peace, prosperity and stability across the Roman Empire that lasted from 27 B.C.E to 180 C.E, approximately 206 long years. This reign of peace throughout the Roman Empire began with Augustus. As the Roman Empire expanded its territory to larger regions of the world; adding lands in North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, its population expanded to an estimated 70 million people. The growing complications of taking over such a large sum of land resulted in many different challenges to the Roman’s.
The Roman Empire fell because of the disruption in the political foundation. Foundation is an underlying basis or principle for something. The Romans became tolerant to Christianity, which undermined the romans belief that their emperor was a god. “But the Christian belief in one god — who was not the emperor — weakened the authority and credibility of the emperor.” (The fall of Roman Empire)
The legendary Roman Empire lasted from 753 B.C.E. all the way until 1453 A.D. However Rome split in two at about 395 A.D. which crippled the ancient Rome we know. So really ancient Rome lived from 753 B.C.E. to 476 A.D. But the name of Rome continued on in the Byzantine empire for about another 1000 years. Yet many people nowadays still refer to Rome as one of the greatest ancient civilizations of all time.
Roman Fever by Edith Wharton is an excellent example of quality literature. Wharton uses the literary devices of foreshadowing, irony, and allusion throughout the story. These are implemented to enhance the quality by aiding in unifying the theme, expanding characterization and to link back to the central purpose of the story. Foreshadowing is used early on in the story.

The Legacy of the Roman Empire The ancient Roman saying states: All roads lead to Rome! And this was true, in this essay I will show what great achievements and inventions happened during the plus minus 500 years from 27 Before Common Era, to 476 Common Era, in the Roman Empire and argue how these achievements and inventions still have influences in our everyday life and the modern world we live in today. Of course the Roman Empire consisted of more than just Roads, the Roman legislative system, their customs and traditions, religions, social structure, political system, art, architecture, writing, philosophy, citizenship, language use and military advancements held their Empire and their citizens together. I will reflect and show, how some of these tools the Romans used almost 2000 years ago, still live on through us today.
Karl Popper: Problem of Demarcation and Falsification as Criterion of Demarcation Karl Raimond Popper, born in July 1902 in Vienna, was one of the most influential philosopher of science and political thinker. Since his childhood only he had interests in social and political issues. This made him join Association of Socialist School Students, an association based on Marxist ideology. But very soon he found the theory to be disillusioned of the doctrine character of the theory itself, and then he entirely disengaged himself with it and became supporter of social liberalism all his life. This in fact, helped him clear his thoughts for his coming theory on problem of demarcation.
