The Romantic period gets its name from Romanticism-a term used to depict a development in craftsmanship, writing, and music that esteemed flexibility of expression. In America, Romanticism supported the thought that a lady 's place was in the home. Before this period, ladies were dealt with more such as workers than wives. Ladies now had the chance to take part in relaxation exercises and frame fellowships with other ladies. These "unreal" dances portrayed women as supernatural beings with extreme fragility, who could rise effortlessly and almost seemed as if they were floating in the air. The dancers began to wear costumes in pastel colors, with skirts that reached to the ankles. An example of the romantic movement is "La Sylphide", one of the oldest romantic dances that is still played by contemporary dancers. The romantic movement was a new exploration of folklore and traditional culture, which began to take part in the folklore of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In the ballet of those times the dancers were characterized as villains or buffoons, so that they could adapt to "Orientalism".

Counterpoint developed to emphasise consonances with dissonances and bring homogeneity to a piece. The elaboration of triadic harmony and the maturity of polyphonic music added more clarity and focused on sound as opposed to mathematical logic. Music started to become an art form in the Renaissance which was not present in the previous era. Without the advancements in the Renaissance, music would not have developed into what is known today as ‘modern’ Western art

The Romantics believed that we could discover the imagination in nature, which often resulted in a harmony of the two. However, there are times when nature and imagination are in conflict with each other; for example, when imagination acts as an illusion, and distracts us from confronting the issue.
