Shakespeare starts by introducing us to a close friend of Juliet the nurse, the nurse is a mother figure to Juliet and shows love and affection by nurturing and caring for her since a young age and supporting her decisions later on in the play. Shakespeare efficiently uses both aspects of love and hate throughout the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to bring the characters to life. Mercutio also holds a strong love for his close friend, Romeo. Mercutio protects Romeo from Tybalt which shows us hate but also love towards Romeo by risking his own life for his best friend.

Mercutio and Romeo love each other a lot, they have a brotherly bond together. Mercutio is known as a prankster and a joker as he constantly makes jokes about Romeo being in love with rosaline, he continuously makes smart remarks about Romeo being in love such as “Nay, ill conjure too. Romeo! Humours! Madman! Passion! Lover!” Mercutio used exclamation marks in a playful high-spirited tone providing furthermore that the bond between him and Mercutio is strong love, and they have platonic, brotherly relationship as brothers joke around and mess around with each other. They used exclamation marks and constantly make jokes with each other as brothers do. They are also sarcastic towards each other with brothers also do. Mercutio also protects Romeo against Tybalt showing love towards Romeo by risking his own life but also hating Tybalt at the same time. Mercutio also hates the arguments and disagreements between the families which even leads to his death we can see this when Mercutio says” A plague a’both houses I am sped.” This tells us that Mercutio is angry and hurt from the family rivalry and wants is to end but he also loves his cousin/best friend Romeo so he will risk his life to fight for
