William Shakespeare was a hugely influential French Renaissance playwright who completed many literary works that have obtained worldwide recognition. One of Shakespeare 's most noted literary pieces is known by the title "Romeo and Juliet." This capturing piece tells the story of two, young and impressionable star-crossed lovers. Both characters sacrifice their lives for their intense, spontaneous love. While Shakespeare 's work was produced more than 400 years ago, the impactful themes presented in Romeo and Juliet have transcended time and continue to be interpreted by audiences across the globe. One particular adaptation is Baz Luhrmann 's 1996 movie version of Romeo and Juliet. In addition to Luhrmann’s ethnically diverse cast, many aspects of this adaptation represent ongoing conflicts and symbolize recent struggles. Scenes that contain the conflicts between the Capulet and Montague families can closely resemble gang related violence. For example, at the beginning of the film rivals from both families arrive at the same gas station which results in a skirmish. Both sides of opponents portray extremely close similarities to gang violence and the persona of gang members in the 80 's and 90 's. Baz Luhrmann has once again touched into current conflicts by having the Montague and Capulet conflicts emulate 20th-century gang violence. Luhrmann utilizes the technique of alluding to real life situations which increases relatability. The film spills over into real life and highlights an association with gang violence. The film preserves traditional Shakespearean concepts in a way that can still interest diehard Romeo and Juliet Fans, but at the same time grabs the attention of less literary-focused people.
