Cumulative Essay: How Literature Connects To People And Society When it comes to literature, it can be about anything from fiction, science fiction, and poetry, but even though they are different genres, there is a topic that they all connect to. Dreams states it’s important to grapple with your beliefs and what you want to strive for by showing us what it means to be human by informing readers that if you want to do something with your life, you must not let go and make your dream a reality. Langston Hughes gave us these points to help us try to convey what he was talking about when he states, “For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly”. He also said, “For when dreams go, life is a barren field, frozen with snow”. He compares what life would be like for the other person who was dreaming to barren fields and broken-winged birds, which conveys how you should follow your dreams. In the book, Julia Alveraz had a lot of nicknames growing up, which took a toll on how she perceived her identity. Struggling to find your true identity is what most of us can relate to, and the best way to find your identity is connecting to your heritage as we see what Julia does in the story with the lines, “My Dominican heritage was never more apparent than when my extended family attended school”.
