The Cause of Romeo and Juliet’s End Romeo and Juliet, a popular play written by William Shakespeare, is a play that is read by almost everyone in their English classes and is known for its sad love story. In the play, two lovers from opposing families go through many struggles just to stay together while keeping their relationship a secret. Unfortunately, it all ends in suicide by both of them, and the one who helped them a great amount behind the scenes was the church’s Friar, who thought of plans to keep them together as a couple. Since Romeo and Juliet were from two households that hated each other, The Friar’s decision to wed them would put them at risk for scrutiny if they were ever found together. In the play, Romeo seeks permission from The Friar to get married to Juliet. The Friar then attempts to convince Romeo that this isn’t a good decision and questions him about his love for Rosaline and is hesitant to marry him and Juliet. “Not in a grave, To lay one in, another out to have” (II.iii.83b-84). The Friar says this knowing that Romeo is putting his old love in a grave and immediately digging up a new relationship, meaning that The Friar is still against this decision, yet he still marries them. Additionally, The Friar still took care of Romeo even though he fully knew Romeo was exiled. Since Romeo was exiled from Verona, he could not return to Verona without being executed if he got caught. After receiving the verdict from The Prince, The Friar, who told Romeo of his situation, still allowed Romeo to stay in his church to get back to Juliet. “Hence from Verona art thou banishèd. Be patient, for the world is broad and wide” (III.iii.15-16).
