Romeo and Juliet Comparison Essay West side story is deeply beneficial for diversity because of how it shows the different point of views of the white and puerto rican people. It shows racism, violence, and lots of profiling based on race. In the movie West Side Story they are rivals and hate each other, the white people (jets) are extremely racist towards the Puerto Ricans and don't like them for “taking their territory”. In Romeo and Juliet there is rivalry but with no specific reason but the hatred gets passed down like tradition. This comes into play with the hatred between the two groups because the jets don't want them there, they want things in an order and they want it in their way. The jets don't want to share their land with the immigrants and see it as disrespectful that they think that they can just come along and be on their land. There was a dance where both the jets and the sharks were and there was a massive wave of tension in the room. They don't like each other and wouldn't want to be near each other except for the main characters, Maria and Tony. In both Romeo and Juliet the two main characters kiss, in West side story it was Maria and Tony and in Romeo and Juliet it was Romeo and Juliet. Neither of them have met and all they know about one another is that their families are rivals. Both lovers kiss at a dance and they claim it was love at first sight. They both instantly fall in love with each other and want to be with one another and they don't care about the family hatred they have. Both of the lovers continue to see each other and families and rivalry groups disapprove and think poorly on their decision not wanting them to be together.For Tony and Maria, their race was a big thing with their relationship too because for the jets and sharks, a white man cant be with a Puerto Rican
