Passage 1 : (Act II, Scene 2) “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.” - Romeo Passage 2 : (Act V, Scene 1) “A dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear As will disperse itself through all the veins That the life-weary taker may fall dead.” - Romeo I think the author chose to use the imagery of sunlight in the first passage because Shakespeare creates a theme of light and dark throughout the book; the light being Juliet and the darkness being Romeo. He speaks of the sunlight rising in the East, symbolizing Juliet’s escalating importance to him. In the second passage, the author uses symbolization form of figurative language, because he wants to create slight irony that Romeo only drank the poison to be with Juliet in the afterlife, and Juliet only took the poison as to be with Romeo in actuality. Juliet is seen as the light of Romeo’s world, while he is seen as the forbidden darkness. She is worshipped and adored by men and boys alike, a prized possession of her father’s making. Romeo does come from prestigious background, but he is the lowest of the earth to the Capulets, and it was unimaginable to think that their daughter would ever associate herself with such tenebrosity. I think that Romeo and Juliet is a perfect example of the butterfly effect. So many factors were in play that caused tragedy. If the families hadn’t had a rivalry, the kids wouldn’t have to hide their love. If they were open about their romance, Juliet wouldn’t have taken the poison, and then Romeo wouldn’t have taken his poison, Paris wouldn’t have killed himself, and Juliet wouldn’t have stabbed herself.
