Fate in Romeo and Juliet Fate, the idea of a force outside of human control that determines our future, was and is still a concept many people believe in. William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is the tale of two star-crossed lovers who died tragically to be with each other. At the heart of the story, is the theme of fate, which plays a significant role in shaping the lives of the main characters, Romeo and Juliet’s, lives. In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the recurring idea of fate is used to question how much, if any, control we have over our own fate. The prologue of Romeo and Juliet foretells the story in its entirety, the chorus details exactly what will happen to Romeo and Juliet, “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.” (Prologue.5-6) Shakespeare uses this as a symbol of fate in order to convey the idea that Romeo and Juliet’s deaths had already been predetermined. The illeration in “from forth the fatal” places a heavy emphasis on the word fatal, which is synonymous with death. The word fatal in a spoken context also sounds similar to the word fate. Upon learning of Juilet’s “death” Romeo proclaims, “Then I deny you, stars!” (5.1.24) Romeo throughout the story has felt at the whims of fate, in Act Three Romeo after killing Tybalt exclaims “O, I am fortune’s fool!” (3.1.131), Romeo by saying that he will deny the stars, ultimately means he wants to deny fate. He is willing to resist what the stars chose for him, he no longer wants to play the fool. In a moment of sadness he cries out to the heavens. But in Romeo’s attempt to defy fate, he ultimately ends up exactly doing what was foretold. Him and his star-crossed lover are dead into the hands of fate.
