The tragic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare recounts the narrative of two young lovers whose relationship is doomed from the outset. The play is a classic example of how fate can shape and dominate the events in a person's life. While various circumstances contribute to Romeo and Juliet's tragic finale, fate is the more powerful force dictating the events of the play. This essay will argue in favor of this assertion by studying many major incidents in the play, as well as responding to a rebuttal. From the beginning of the play, it is evident that Romeo and Juliet are destined to fall in love and face tragedy. This is evident when Romeo declares, “my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars” (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 113-114). Romeo recognizes that his fate is predetermined, and there is nothing he can do to change it. Similarly, when Juliet learns of Romeo’s identity and realizes he is a Montague, she exclaims, “my only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late!” (Act 1, Scene 5, Line 137-138). Juliet also recognizes that fate has brought her together with someone who is supposed to be her enemy.
