In the play, Romeo & Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Lady Capulet is a foil to Nurse because Lady Capulet has a distanced relationship with Juliet despite being her own biological mother while Nurse is more of a motherly figure to Juliet. To begin with, in the beginning of the play, it is quickly understood that Nurse has nurtured Juliet and cares much about her. She shares to Lady Capulet, Thou was the prettiest that e er I nursed. And I might live to see thee merriest once, I have my wish (Shakespeare 1.3.62-64). Nurse wants the best for Juliet and prioritizes Juliet’s happiness. Nurse’s actions make note of the unemotional bond that Lady Capulet and Juliet have failed to create; both showing little to no insight for each other. Moreover, Nurse shows her support towards Juliet after Romeo’s banishment, and expresses, “Shame come to Romeo” (Shakespeare 3.2.91). This indicates how Nurse is angered with Romeo because of him causing stress and sorrow to Juliet. She tries to make Juliet feel better. However, Lady Capulet creates a sense of desertedness and shows no support to Juliet when Lord Capulet proceeded with the marriage with Paris. Lady Capulet states, “Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee” (Shakespeare 3.5.202-203). Nurse does her best to show sympathy towards Juliet, but Lady Capulet speaks from her and Lord Capulet’s own interests. This empathizes the immense differences in the relationship Nurse and Lady Capulet have with Juliet individually because of Lady Capulet’s lack of affection and comfort.
