While Shakespeare plays with the concept that Romeo and Juliet’s lives are left in the hands of fate, he also argues that individuals around them make choices of their own free will that cause Romeo and Juliet’s death. Friar Laurence's free will and the choices he makes impact the way Romeo and Juliet get to their fate. . While Friar Lawrence is talking to Romeo about his new found interest in Juliet, he has an idea about how they can end their families feud with their love. “For this alliance may so happily prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love,” (2.3.98). If Friar Laurence didn't make his elaborate plan and the feuding stopped, Romeo and Juliet's fate may have taken longer to get to. For example, if Friar Laurence got to Romeo faster and told him the plan, Romeo wouldn’t have gotten the poison and killed himself. This relates to how Romeo and Juliets fate is death, it would have taken them longer to get there if both sides knew of the plan. Friar Laurence expresses his thoughts on the new couple's relationship and how he believes that if they make good decisions there will be an overall great outcome. “Within the infant rind of this weak flower. Poison hath residence and medicine power,” (2.3.23). Here, Friar Laurence talks about how this small flower contains poison, but also medicine, similar to how there is good and evil in the world. This relates to Romeo and Juliet’s relationship because good could come from them being together. Friar Laurence suggests that their family feud could stop because of them, which means Friar Laurence wouldn’t have had to come up with an elaborate plan to get them together and their fates may have been different.
