When was the last time you loved someone? Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers who have to overcome obstacles to finally be together. It takes place in Verona, a city in Italy, during the Elizabethan era. The most important theme of this play is love vs hate. The two characters are battling with their own families, due to their hate, but they still love each other and would do whatever it takes to be together. During act 1, the beginning of this play, it is seen that Romeo loves easily. This leads him to meet Juliet and love Juliet as if she had been with him for years, but they had only just met. In the next act, they speak of trying things that would let them be together, like in this moment, Juliet says “Romeo, doff thy name, and, for thy name, which is no part of thee, take all myself”. This causes the Capulet family to be mad, and the nurse cries to Juliet about what happened. Juliet is more upset about Romeo being banished than Tybalt dying. She says “All slain, all dead, “Romeo is banished.” There is no end, no limit, measure, bound in that word’s death. No words can that woe sound”. Her saying this shows how much she cares for Romeo, even after he killed her cousin. Act 4 begins with Friar Lawrence speaking with Paris, but after he leaves, Juliet goes into Friar Lawrence’s cell to speak with him. This causes the story to take a rough turn, with Juliet trying to find ways to be with her Romeo. During this Juliet even says “If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help, do thou but call my resolution wise, and with this knife i’ll help it presently”. Her saying this shows that she would even die, so that she wouldn’t have to live without Romeo. Love vs hate is a strong theme for this story, and the most important because it shows what Romeo and Juliet would do to be with each other, even if they had to die to do
