The Depth of Love “And yet I wish but for the thing I have; My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite” (Shakespeare 729). Is Romeo and Juliet is still seen as a tragedy? Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a play about two lovers in Verona. Their families have an ancient grudge; therefore, their love is forbidden, and the love and loyalty of Romeo and Juliet is tested throughout the play. The story of Romeo and Juliet is a romance. To get started, one reason Romeo and Juliet is a romance is that it ends with something good coming out of the whole story. Romeo cannot get his mind off another girl that he claimed to love, but the moment he sees Juliet he doesn’t stop thinking about her until he dies. In the first moments of seeing her, he says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (Shakespeare 717). Juliet shares this love and later in the night she represents it when she is frustrated and says, “My only love, sprung from my only hate!” (Shakespeare 720). We know that Juliet shares his feelings because she says that he is her only love. Furthermore, Juliet has fallen in love with Romeo so soon, showing that her love is so strong it can vanquish her only hate. Romeo goes to buy poison from a poor apothecary after he learns that Juliet is dead and he says, “Let me have a dram of poison, such soon-speeding gear as will disperse itself through all the veins that the life-weary taker may fall dead” (Shakespeare 792). The only reason Romeo wants to die is that he feels that he can’t live without Juliet, making his love more important than anything. When Juliet sees that Romeo drank the poison she says, “O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die” (Shakespeare 799). Juliet stabs herself because she cannot imagine living without Romeo. Likewise, Romeo feels that he cannot live without Juliet.
