The feud between the Montague and Capulet families had been going on well before Romeo and Juliet were born, but it was their death that was able to turn the hate into love. The topics of hate and love show up many times throughout the play and in the end it is revealed that hate can turn into love with one simple gesture. Hate and love were the two most recurring topics in Romeo and Juliet, the hate between the Montague and Capulet families is established from the beginning of the story and shows up many times throughout the story as well. The hate between the Capulet and Montague families was well known and even as Romeo and Juliet fell in love, that hate still shone through at times. In Act one, Scene five, the Capulet family is throwing a party in which some of the Montagues; including Romeo, decide to attend, “I can tell by his voice that this man is a Montague. (to his PAGE) Get me my sword, boy.—What, does this peasant dare to come here with his face covered by a mask to sneer at and scorn our celebration? Now, by the honor of our family, I do not consider it a crime to kill him.” (Shakespeare 1.5. 52-57). Going to a party that is hosted by your family’s enemy is risky but Romeo did it anyway. At the beginning of the play when Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time initially they are in love, “The only man I love is the son of the only man I hate! I saw him too early without knowing who he was, and I found out who he was too late! Love is a monster for making me fall in love with my worst enemy.” (Shakespeare 1.5. 39-43). After Juliet learns who Romeo is, she is torn. She has to decide whether to go against what her family would want and love a Montague or do what she knows would be approved of and hate the Montague that has crawled his way into her life. In the end of the story after Romeo and Juliet have died, the Prince points out to their parents that this all happened because they felt they had to hide their love, “Capulet! Montague! Do you see what great evil results from your hate? Heaven has figured out how to kill your joys with love.” (Shakespeare 5.3. 308-310). The hate between the Montagues and Capulets caused their children to keep their love hidden. That led to miscommunication between the two kids and that sadly led to their deaths. After their parents heard that it was partially their fault that their children died they realized how silly their hatred was, “Oh, brother Montague, give me your hand. This is my daughter’s dowry.
