Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, that virtually everyone has at least heard of once or twice. The basic premise of this play is the star crossed love felt between two children of two separate families living in Verona, Italy that have been in bad blood for as long as anyone can remember, but they don’t even know why they hate each other anymore. The two children are Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, and their love is something they never thought would end, but took their love too far and both die for the other. Although initially avoiding any interaction, he spots Juliet across the room and displays one of his fatal flaws- he’s impulsively driven in his decisions. Only a few minutes after spotting her, he kisses her 2 times with barely any words spoken. This brief interaction leaves him obsessed with her.He knows the relationship with Juliet will not work, even foretelling his death that would come if he chose to love Juliet. He states, “Amen, amen. But come what sorrow can,/It cannot countervail the exchange of joy/That one short minute gives me in her sight./Do thou but close our hands with holy words,/Then love-devouring death do what he dare;/It is enough I may but call her mine.” (II.vi.3-8). Juliet is despaired after hearing of Tybalt’s death, but is more distraught over Romeo’s banishment. With conflicting emotions she says, “Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?/Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name,/When I, thy three hours' wife, have mangled it?/But wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin?/That villain cousin would have killed my husband.”(III.ii.98-103). This melts down to ‘If Tybalt didn’t die, Romeo would have.’ This is a point of evidence that she values her love of Romeo over the lives of her very family. This extreme love for Romeo later leads her into deciding she’d rather die than lose him forever. The Friar becomes concerned with this statement and how serious she was, and gave Juliet a potion that would make her appear as dead to everyone. When she is later found and believed to be dead, she’s laid in the Capulet family tomb. Romeo dies because he drank poison so he could meet her in the afterlife, not knowing she was still alive. Their ‘undying’ love lead to Romeo’s death now, not just others related to him and Juliet. However their chain of events didn’t actually end until Juliet killed herself because of Romeo’s death.
