Romeo and Juliet is no longer relevant in modern day. Even though there is still miscommunication between parents and children, young love, and family conflict it is not the same as it once was, overall, Romeo and Juliet is no longer relevant in the twenty first century because of the laws and language are outdated also the society and culture is different. In early England laws were very different from the laws of modern day. The laws were much more harsh then they are now, for example: “ If you ever disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.” (Act 1 scene 1, lines 89-91) This means that if the there was a rowdy person, or group of people who repetitively caused trouble they would be killed. Which is unruly and not right. This makes the play hard to relate to, because today this group of people would be taken into custody and given a court date. The people of this time also used different form of grammar, making it hard for young readers to comprehend. For example “ Well in that hit you miss. She shall not be hit with Cupid’s arrow.”( Act 1 scene 1, lines 201-202) Meaning that Romeo has not hit it off, or impressed the young lady and she will not like him, in a romantic sense. In our modern day we would have just something along the lines of “ You didn’t impress her” or “ She doesn’t really like you”. Since it is already hard for some teenagers to understand today's grammar, because nowadays all we use is abbreviation and slang, it just adds onto the fact that this play is no longer relevant to us of the twenty first
