In literature, crows symbolize tragedy and death while swans symbolize strength and insight of the future and strength. In the grand scheme of things, this is ironic because Juliet, who is represented by the swan, ends up dying and Rosaline, who is represented by the crow, lives. Ultimately, these two lines are important to the play because they show how quickly Romeo changes his mind about his feelings for both girls, it furthers the plot, and gives significant foreshadowing.
