Lessons in Love Have you ever wondered what happens when two young teenagers fall in love? Well in this case, it doesn’t end well. The play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare tells the tale of two young teens who over the course of a few days fall in love. In the play, Romeo sneaks into a party of his enemies house, and then falls in love with his family rivals daughter. Throughout the play, a few tragedies happen that lead to their death. The death of Romeo and Juliet was affected by Romeo sneaking into the Capulet party, Friar Lawrence believing he can turn their families from hate to love, and Friar Lawrence telling Juliet to fake her death which demonstrates that while loyalty can be great, it can also be evil. Romeo confides in Friar Lawrence telling him how much he loves Juliet so Friar decides to marry the two. He then thinks he can turn their families into friends: “[Romeo]: I pray thee chide me not. Her I love now / Doth grace for grace and love for love allow. / The other did not so. / [Friar Lawrence]: O, she knew well / Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell […] For this alliance may so happy prove / To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (2.3.91-95 […] 99). Here we see Romeo telling Friar Lawrence that he loves Juliet now and that she allows love. Friar responds to him by saying that Rosaline knew not to let Romeo love her and that you must have love within in you, not learned. He also says he will help turn Romeo and Juliet’s houses from hate into love. In this quote, Friar Lawrence decides to help Romeo by trying to get Romeo and Juliet’s families to love each other. Because Friar Lawrence had this loyalty to Romeo, he tried to have the two houses become friends which resulted in a fight. This fight caused Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio, to be killed by Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, who Romeo kills in revenge for slaying his friend.
