The Friar is startled by the idea of marriage between Romeo and Juliet due to the ongoing fight between families, “Holy Saint Francis, what change is here!”(2.3.69) He thinks that Romeo is in love with Rosaline but instead he is in love with his enemy. After debating with Romeo, Friar Lawrence marries Juliet and Romeo. By allowing the two lovers to be married he allowed their love to intensify and he let them believe that everything was going to be okay in their marriage. Yet, less than 24 hours after being married, Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished by the Prince. Juliet unable to control herself “...how I may prevent this”( 4.1.52.) begs Friar Lawrence to come up with a plan to allow Romeo to stay in Verona. The Friar promises Romeo that a letter will tell him when to return but for now he is to stay in Mantua. Juliet in hopes of not marrying Paris asks the Friar for a potion. When Friar Lawrence gives Juliet this potion the audience now knows what is to come. Romeo races back to find “dead” Juliet and kills himself right before his lover is awakened. This sense of trust in Friar Lawrence is gone when Juliet awakens and finds her husband head on the floor.
